Development of herbal medicines from the leaves of the walnut tree (Aleurites moluccanus): report experience of Community University and national pharmaceutical company

Industrial pharmacist (UFPR - 1990) completed a doctorate in Sciences (Biochemistry) from the Federal University of Paraná in 1998, with a sandwich scholarship at the "Center de Recherche sur les Macromolécules Végétales - CERMAV, in Grenoble (France). She was Professor of the Department of Pharmacy at UFPR, from 1994-2000, She was coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PPGCF) University of Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI) from 2003-2015. She is currently a professor at the Pharmacy and Biomedicine Course and a professor at the PPGCF at UNIVALI. Collaborated with the project to revise the monographs of the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, was an evaluator of INEP for recognition of undergraduate courses. He works in the Pharmacy area, with an emphasis on Analysis and Control of Drugs and Medicines, CLAE and Analytical Validation, a University-Company partnership in the development of herbal medicines and phytocosmetics. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences (ABCF) - advisory board.
Ruth Meri Lucinda da Silva

Graduated in Pharmacy from the University of Vale do Itajaí (1996), Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Paulista State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (1999), PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Paulista State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (2003) and Post-doctorate from University of Seville (2010). She is currently a productivity fellow at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development and a professor at the University of Vale do Itajaí in the Pharmacy Undergraduate Course and advisor in the Postgraduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Has experience in Pharmacy, focusing on research involving controlled release of drugs, micro and nanosystems, with therapeutic and cosmetic application, from biopolymers and development of phytomedicines and phytocosmetics.
Christiane Meyre-Silva

Graduated in Pharmacy from the University of Vale do Itajaí (1997), Master in Chemistry from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2000) and PhD in Chemistry from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2004). He is currently an adjunct professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Has 1 national and international patent filed (Development of a New Phytotherapic) in partnership with Univali. He is a member of the National Institute of Science and Technology for Pharmaceutical Innovation (INCT_if). Has experience in Chemistry, focusing on Natural Product Chemistry, acting on phytochemical research of plants with medicinal interest.
Nara Lins Meira Quintão

Graduated in Physiotherapy from the University of Vale do Itajaí (2000) and Master and PhD in Pharmacology from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2006). Has experience in Pharmacology, focusing on Pharmacology of Pain and Inflammation. He is part of the faculty of the University of Vale do Itajaí in the Physiotherapy, Medicine and Biomedicine Course and in the Postgraduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. He recently held a postdoctoral internship at Boston Children's Hospital - Harvard Medical School (USA) under the supervision of Professor Dr. Clifford Woolf. in the area of pain neurobiology.
Valdir Cechinel Filho

Organic Chemistry from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (1987), a master's degree from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (1991) and a doctorate in Graduate Studies in Chemistry from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (1995). He is currently Rector of the University of Vale do Itajaí (UNIVALI), President of the UNIVALI Foundation and professor / researcher of the Graduate Program (M / D) in Pharmaceutical Sciences of UNIVALI. Develops research projects in collaboration with national and international researchers. He also acts as Network Coordinator RIBIOFAR / CYTED / CNPq and RIBECANCER / CYTED / CNPq. Has experience in Organic Chemistry, focusing on Chemistry, acting on the following subjects: bioactive natural products, synthesis of molecules of biological interest, evaluation of the chemical structure-biological activity relationship. He has over 360 published articles, 50 books and book chapters, and 10 patents. He directed about 50 Dissertations and Theses. He has been a reviewer for over 50 journals and serves as Associate Editor The Scientific World Journal and Pharmaceutical Biology. In 2012, he received the Caspar Stemmer Innovation Award (FAPESC) in the Innovation Protagonist Category (First Place. In 2013, he was nominated as a Finalist of the Santander Student Guide Award (Partnership with the Private Sector), for the project developed in partnership with Eurofarma Pharmaceutical Industry In 2015, was nominated Finalist of the Santander 2015 Award in the Science and Innovation category, with the project entitled "Search for new and effective anticancer agents from the Brazilian biodiversity." In 2017, he received the 1st Merit Commendation. Academic of the Council of Rectors of Brazilian Universities (CRUB), sponsored by CNPq, for the contribution to Brazilian Higher Education In March 2018, he assumed the Presidency of the Foundation and the Rectorate of UNIVALI until 2022.
This work, of partnerships between a Community University and national pharmaceutical companies reports the development of new and effective phytotherapics obtained from the leaves of Aleurites mollucanus (Euphorbiaceae), an exotic species, from Asia, adapted in Brazil. The project, although it has not yet reached the final stage of clinical studies and registration with ANVISA, represents a relevant experience to be analyzed in light of the difficulties and overcomes during the stages that make up the chain of establishment of a new herbal medicine in Brazil. Tablets were developed based on the standardized dry extract of A. moluccanus, on pilot scale, with approval in the stages of non-clinical studies and in the clinical stage-phase I. In addition, formulations such as topical cream and oral suspension were established. The overcoming of challenges related to the standardization of the extract on an industrial scale, under good manufacturing practices (GMP) and the stability aspects of the formulations, the continuity of studies depends on the scenario and consequent market direction. Therefore, this report provides an insight into the setbacks and overcoming experienced by researchers from Brazilian Community University with a focus on research and development of new, effective and safe analgesic and anti-inflammatory herbal medicine.
