This work describes a micropropagation protocol for three different chemotypes of Lippia alba, which essential oil’s major components are citral, carvone and linalol. L. alba is widely used in traditional medicine and among other characteristics, is of great economical interest for its essential oils. Nodal segments of three chemotypes, were cultured in vitro. Plants were grown in Murashigue and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with sucrose and vitamins but not hormones, with and without norbixin. Plants obtained in this way were then subcultured to identify if the addition of IAA and kinetin optimized plant growth. The results showed that these hormones were not required to successfully culture and multiply the three chemotypes of L. alba in vitro. Addition of norbixin was efficient in decreasing plant tissue oxidation. This faster and more economical protocol did not affect ex vitro acclimation of plants that was also successful.
