Abstract
Use of medicinal plants is ancient, but it still contributes to prophylactic, curative or palliative actions against diseases. A promising plant is Schinus terebinthifolius, from the Anacardiaceae family, popularly known as red pepper tree. The objective was to conduct a systematic review of the literature gathering information on the healing potential of S. terebinthifolius in the treatment of skin wounds, which may contribute to highlight the importance of this medicinal species of Brazilian flora. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in the SciELO, PubMed, Google Scholar and Capes Periodicals databases, using the following descriptors: “Schinus terebinthifolius” and “wound”. The search resulted in 367 articles, but only eight were summarized within the scope of the research. The literature regarding research on the healing potential of S. terebinthifolius is still scarce, despite the promising results obtained. The predominance of in vivo tests and the use of leaves to obtain extracts was noticeable. All experiments were prepared in the form of topical application, with variations in the tested dose and duration. The studies highlighted the efficiency of the species in wound healing, being considered favorable for the composition of phytotherapeutic agents and proving the use of the plant by the population.
