Abstract

Red Lapacho (Handroanthus impetiginosus Mart. Ex DC. Mattos) is a vegetal species native to the Brazilian Cerrado. This species is traditionally used in Brazil, especially for its antimicrobial, antioxidant and antineoplasic activities. Although only its inner bark is popularly used in decoctions, some authors state that its heartwood might also provide potentially active substances. This study aims to compare traditional methods of extraction by maceration and decoction of heartwood and inner barks of red lapacho. The herbal drugs obtained from both inner bark and heartwood were analyzed in terms of ashes and water contents. The extracts were characterized by qualitative and quantitative analysis in order to identify seven different classes of potentially active secondary metabolites, and quantify dry residue and total polyphenols. Flavonoids and phenolic compounds were identified in all the extracts, besides saponins in decoctions and alkaloids in hydroethanolic extracts. Inner bark extracts showed a higher content of dry residue, and the inner bark decoction showed higher values in total polyphenols content (1,11 mg/mL ± 0,01) extracting 5,62 mg of total polyphenols per gram of dry herbal drug. The Inner bark decoction showed the best extractive profile, which confirms this extraction method as the most suitable for therapeutic purposes.
