Abstract
In the scenario of chronic diseases, alternative therapies have become quite common for those who do not
have access to conventional medicine. The plant Cissus verticillata is used in alternative medicine by a large
amount of diabetic people, due to its supposed hypoglycemic properties, that is, without scientific proof.
Thus, the present work aimed to develop a review of the literature related to pharmacology of Cissus
Verticillata, focusing on the potential hypoglycemic activity, seeking to verify scientific evidence that
indicates, or not, the plant’s hypoglycemic properties. For that, a systematic review of articles and academic
works found in specific research bases was carried out using keywords. The criteria of the analysis were: if
tests of hypoglycemic activity of Cissus verticillata were made; the different types of extracts; and the objects
of study. In this research it was possible to observe that the tests in humans had the least promising results,
while positive results were mostly from the combination of aqueous extract with the object of study male
Wistar rats. Thus, it was concluded that it is not possible to certify efficacy of the plant against Type 2
diabetes mellitus, needing future researche for the certainty of this claim.
