He holds a degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Bristol (1950) and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Bristol (1954). He is currently a senior technologist at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. He has experience in the area of Chemistry, with an emphasis on the Chemistry of Natural Products, working mainly on the following topics: chemical standardization of medicinal plants, implementation of phytotherapy in the SUS (Brazilian Health System), production of monographs on medicinal plants. He was part of expert groups of the World Health Organization in the writing of books on Monographs of Medicinal Plants and Guides to Good Practices in Agricultural Production and Quality Control, and Monographs on Environmental Health Criteria. He participated in the Biology and Vector Control Committee of the Pan American Health Organization for several years and in the Board of Directors of the International Organization for the Development of Chemistry.

Master in Philosophy from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2002) and Master in Sciences, Systems Engineering and Computing, area of History of Sciences and Epistemological Techniques from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2005), PhD in History of Science, Techniques and Epistemology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (2010), working mainly in the following areas: medicinal plants, phytotherapy, history of science, philosophy of science. He was Editor of the Fitos Magazine.
This monograph comprises the presentation of Allium sativum L.(Amaryllidaceae),It groups and systematizes the knowledge about the structure, characteristics, properties and use. The aim of this study was to present the botanical identification, definition of the physical characteristic’s chemical contents of the active principles, pharmacological properties and their therapeutic indications and care of use.
