Abstract
Extract of the chaste tree Vitex agnus-castus (VAC) is common used in treatments related to premenstrual symptoms, as well as mastodynia cyclic and hyperprolactenemia, and also other somatic symptoms and physic of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), in addition there also are reports about its usage in the luteal phase disorders of menstrual cycle and on menopausal symptoms. There are not many data regarding the effects of VAC available in PMS syndromes and other female conditions. Hence, this bibliographical review has aimed to search for an enhanced insight about the action mechanism of extracts of the fruits of VAC, its clinical effectiveness and pharmacological effects besides the action relief of severe symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome, primarily in hyperprolactenemia and mastodynia, including the menopause itself and the luteal phase disorders. Therefore, we have verified a greater amount of studies related to the usage and effectiveness of the extract of the chaste tree regarding the relief in cyclical mastodynia and hyperprolactemia of PMS, which it has proven its valid endurance and inhibition against mild pain by dopaminergic principles of VAC.
