Abstract

The use of medicinal plants is a popular practice that is accepted by some health professionals. The objective of this study was to know if the doctors, dental surgeons and nurses of the health units in the city of Juazeiro-Bahia have the knowledge and realize the importance of the use and indications of medicinal plants and herbal medicines. It is a cross-sectional, exploratory and descriptive study in which 56 professionals from higher education participated. Data were obtained through an individual interview, using a semi-structured form. The Pearson chi square test was used for the statistical analysis, with significance level of p <0.05. As result, was observed that 30 (53.57%) professionals said they did not know how to guide patients about the use of medicinal plants and that the concept of herbal medicines and the difference in relation to homeopathic medicines were not clear for some. The plants most frequently mentioned by the doctors were Valeriana officinalis L. and Matricaria recutita L., by the nurses were Plectranthus barbatus A. and Passiflora edulis S. and by the dentists were Punica granatum L. and Mentha piperita L. It was concluded that the professionals of the municipality need training on this therapeutic alternative.
