With expertise in Organic Chemistry, mainly in the following lines of research: Medicinal plants, Identification and Isolation of organic molecules and Biotechnology.
In recent years, numerous multidrug-resistant microorganisms have emerged. A special mechanism that confers resistance to antibiotics and the immune system is the ability to form biofilm. This structure is a cluster of bacteria surrounded by a polymeric matrix that protects them. The present study sought to quantify and classify the production of biofilm by microorganisms frequently found in Health Care Related Infections (HAIs) and strains isolated from an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in addition to testing the antibiofilm activity of the leaf extract of the Lafoensia pacari. The biomass quantification method with violet crystal and reading at 570nm was used. Higher production of biofilm was obtained by bacteria from the group of gram-negatives such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from a mattress and among the gram-positive E. faecalis stands out (ATCC 19429). The plant extract had antibiofilm action in 50% of the microorganisms tested, including among the strongest biofilm-forming agents.
