The quality of Active Plant Pharmaceutical Ingredients (IFAV) obtained from medicinal plants depends on a thorough quality control that guarantees their safe physical and biological. The products of plant species that act on the Central Nervous System (CNS) are widely used because they cause fewer adverse effects than synthetic psychotropic drugs, which motivate the search for safe treatments. Among the medicinal species with this therapeutic purposes, Valeriana officinalis L. (Caprifoliaceae Juss.) stands out. This study evaluated the microbiological quality of the plant drug and dry extract of V. officinalis. The mesophilic microorganisms and pathogenic were counted in 16 samples were searched. The counting result indicated that 56.25% of the plant drug samples did not meet the specifications because they had a high microbial load in the count of fung and bacteria. Pathogen research evidenced the growth of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the plant drug. The samples of dry extract it presented 100% approval. The results purchase for demonst the important of quality control the medicines and the need for greater inspection of plant drug and outher easily accessible vegetable inputs.
