José Elvino do Nascimento Júnior
Federal University of São João Del-Rei, Departament of Natural Sciences. Praça Dom Helvécio, 74, Dom Bosco, CEP 36301160 - São João del Rei, MG, Brazil
I am currently an Adjunct Professor at the Federal University of São João del Rei. I have a degree in Biological Sciences from the Federal University of Sergipe (2009) and a master's and doctorate from the Graduate Program in Plant Biology at the State University of Campinas. In my doctorate I developed studies in taxonomy, phylogeny, pollination biology and niche evolution of species of the genus Clusia (Clusiaceae). Although I am currently developing research focused on the genus Clusia, I have experience as a generalist taxonomist. In addition to taxonomic studies, I apply molecular techniques in my research on plant systematics. I have experience with Sanger sequencing methods, but currently use next generation sequencing techniques to elucidate evolutionary relationships and test hypotheses about the diversification of tropical flora. In the last four years I have been researching the pollination biology of species from the Atlantic Forest and Campos rupestres, using natural history data and information on floral volatile compounds to study floral evolution. Methodologically, one of my goals is the development of techniques for the extraction and use of ancient DNA, especially that extracted from plants stored in herbariums. Parallel to these taxonomic, ecological and evolutionary studies, I develop and participate in scientific dissemination activities for the non-academic public. Among these activities are conducting interviews and building websites and applications for smartphones that make plant identification a simpler, faster and easier task even for people with little contact with plant taxonomy.

A medicinal plant known as Jucá (Libidibia ferrea) is a Brazilian tree that possesses several therapeutic uses, including wound healing actions, due to the presence of polyphenols. Fruits from Libidibiaferrea var. leiostachya (Benth.) L.P. and Libidibia ferrea (Mart. ex Tul.) L.P. Queiroz var. ferrea, were collected in Teresina (PI) and Jardinópolis (SP), respectively, and were used to prepare hydroethanolic and hydroglycolic extracts, produced in a 1:10 ratio. The extracts from the fruits from L. ferrea var. ferrea were used for the preparation of creams and ointments, containing 10 % (w/w) of these extracts. The extracts prepared with the fruits from L. ferrea var. ferrea (PI) are twice as concentrated in gallic acid content and in the percentage of dry residue, in comparison with those obtained from the fruits L. ferrea var. leiostachya. Among the formulations prepared, creams and ointments showed, statistically, the same concentration of total phenols, regardless of the type of extract used. The spreadability evaluation, which refers to the distribution of the pharmaceutical form by application area, showed that creams and ointments had very similar behaviors, except for the ointment produced with hydroglycolic extract, which was very fluid, making its therapeutic use unfeasible.
