Abstract

Brazil is the most megabiodiverse country on the planet, but it still does not seem to strategically use its natural resources for the generation of innovations. The lack of knowledge about the possibilities of intellectual protection and the complexities of research and development of natural products further hinder this process. In this context, the objective of this article was to contribute to the issues related to intellectual property and access to genetic heritage and associated traditional knowledge, relating them to the levels of technological maturity. The results showed that the insertion of intellectual property issues at the very beginning of research and development projects involving natural products can help in the execution and intellectual protection of the resulting products and can also make them more viable, both technically and economically.
