Abstract

Among the main pests that affect stored grains is the Gorgulho (Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)). The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of the essential oil of Cymbopogon nardus on the adult mortality of this insect and its effects on the quality of maize seeds. The insecticidal effect was evaluated by the impregnation method, of pure doses of oil of 0; 5; 10; 15 and 20 μL with 20 g of maize seeds, where the percentage of dead insects was observed during 24; 48; 72 and 96 hours. After that, the seeds used in this test were submitted to infestation tests and tests of physiological quality. The designs were completely randomized, with 4 replicates and the means compared by the F and Tukey test (5%). The increase of the dosage and the time of exposure of the insects to the treated seeds caused the increase of the adult mortality of S. zeamais. The essential oil of C. nardus showed insecticidal activity in adults of S. zeamais, its use reduced the feeding of the insects and did not affect the germination of the maize seeds.
