Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae) saffron is originally from Southeast Asia has rhizomes containing curcumin that confer medicinal and flavoring uses. In the present study the toxic cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of Curcuma longa L. rhizome infusion on the Allium cepa plant test system was evaluated. The infusion of crushed rhizome was used in three concentrations: 10, 20, 40 mg.mL-1, in addition to a negative control (distilled water) and a positive control (glyphosate). Toxicity effects were obtained by the average length of roots. The cytotoxic and genotoxic aspects were analyzed microscopically at any stage of the cell cycle, using the mitotic index and the chromosomal aberration index, respectively. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and means were compared by the Dunnett 5% test. It was observed that the concentration of 10 mg.mL-1 is safe. The concentration of 40 mg.mL-1 was toxic for significantly inhibiting the root growth of the bulbs. At 20 and 40 mg.mL-1 concentrations there was antiproliferative with a significant reduction in the mitotic index. Furthermore, at a concentration of 20 mg.mL-1 the presence of binucleated cells was observed and at 40 mg.mL-1 delayed chromosomes binucleate cells and telophasic bridge were observed.
